Obama declares June "LGBT Pride Month"

In a singularly underwhelming (and not really surprising) move to pander to LGBT political activists, our President of the United States has designated June as a month to celebrate homosexuality. "In a presidential proclamation on the White House website, Barack Obama has lauded what he calls "the determination and dedication" of the LGBT movement by proclaiming June as "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month." The LGBT rights movement has achieved great progress," Obama states in the official proclamation, "but there is more to be done. LGBT youth should feel safe to learn without the fear of harassment, and LGBT families and seniors should be allowed to live their lives with dignity and respect." read article here He barely noticed National Day of Prayer. It seems that President Obama has forgotten that the majority of the people that elected him are not supportive of the LGBT agenda. Obama does not represent the majority of the citizens of this nation, and his policies will destroy what makes our nation great. Democracy, free trade, less governmental control, more freedom to control your own life. These principles are such a basic part of our nation, and every new policy that is enacted by King Obama brings us closer and closer to the kind of life enjoyed by the subjects of King Henry VIII's England. I fear that the far-reaching consequences of Obama's executive decisions will destroy the America I love. I am very sad.

It's a good thing Obama thought to have LGBT Pride Month in the summer so all of the gay pride people could parade themselves around as usual without any clothes or morals on. Otherwise, they might catch colds or something. That was very kind of Obama to think of such things.

Actually, those familiar with LGBT history know that June has been the LGBT community's unofficial pride month for many years. Pride month honors Stonewall, the incident in which gays fought back against police raids and harassment at gay bars in New York, which occurred in June 1969. You can read about this in the actual proclamation.

I'm curious, though, other than the fact that this proclamation is pro-LGBT, what specific parts of the proclamation do you disagree with? The part about how gay kids should not be harassed at schools? The part about how LGBT people should be treated with dignity and respect? Please be specific.

ps- Bill Clinton also "proclaimed" June to be Pride month back in 2000.

"These principles are such a basic part of our nation, and every new policy that is enacted by King Obama..."

Are you implying that President Obama was not democratically elected? Please do elaborate, LOL.

Fannie - Let's see, where to start...you have a lot of questions. To put your curiousity to rest: I have no problem with ALL people being treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their sexual orientation (there is no "Heterosexual Pride Month", nor are there "Traditional Family Pride Parades"). I want harrassment of ALL kids, regardless of their sexual orientation, to be abolished from schools (my very straight daughter was threatened and harrassed every day throughout and after the Prop. 8 campaign). Please read my other posts to find out my stance on teaching the LGBT agenda in schools.

In this post, I am simply commenting on the fact that Obama has turned out to be a much more liberal president than he appeared to be during his campaign (and while some may express surprise, I do not, I fully expected this). Most of America isn't interested in legalizing gay marriage, or extending special "rights" to LGBT people. So Obama's policies do not represent America as a whole.
If you have read any of my other posts, you will recognize a theme.
I believe that America elected Obama for three reasons:
1) Backlash against George W. Bush and his party.
2) Charisma
3) The Media worshipped him.
I haven't seen him do anything since taking office that has made me think he is our country's savior. In fact, all I have seen him do is make policy without thought of the far-reaching consequences. If you have paid ANY attention at all to what Obama has been doing, it will be obvious that the government is getting bigger and bigger, going further into debt, and taking increasing control over basic freedoms under the guise of "bail-outs".
My reference to "King Obama" was simply in response to this trend he is following. When will it stop? When the government controls all of our choices? If the LGBT activists get their way, religion will be driven underground, and expressing religious beliefs will become illegal (because it goes against the LGBT agenda). Under King Henry VIII, first Catholics were beheaded, then Protestants (when the king changed his mind). Who will lose their head first? Mormons? There are some who are fighting to see this happen. And that is not American.

Laura,

Just to be clear, then, are you saying that you do not disagree with the actual specifics of the June Pride Month proclamation?

I sense that you are more taking issue with the fact that there is not a heterosexual pride month. Therefore, it might be helpful to explore why it is that the LGBT community celebrates "pride." The heterosexual majority has constructed homosexuality as a deviance and has used this deviance as an excuse to oppress LGBT people in the US. Beginning in the early 1900's, police in the US began raiding venues where gay men were known to congregate and men were arrested, charged, and imprisoned for the crime of "sodomy." (In other countries, such as Iraq and Uganda, this still occurs).

So, you say that you want ALL people to be treated with dignity and respect, and I'm glad we agree on that. But, given that heterosexuality is the dominant, "normal," celebrated sexual orientation, I am not sure I see the purpose. I am not opposed to heterosexuals celebrating "pride" in their identities. But, given that minority communities use Pride events to celebrate overcoming oppression and given the fact that the state has not historically oppressed heterosexuals on the sole basis of their sexual identities, what do you believe the purpose of Heterosexual Pride Day would be?

Also, I am glad you are opposed to all children being harassed in schools. You mention that your "very straight" daughter was harassed during the Prop 8 campaign. Without knowing more specifics, I do think that is unfortunate. Too often, people involved in this debate focus on their own pain and suffering and ignore the harassment that those on the other side face. So, I am glad that we agree that no child should have to endure harassment in schools.

I wonder how we could work together to make sure kids aren't harassed for being or appearing "gay" or for expressing their political beliefs. The real problem, I believe, is harassment. And, that is not a problem unique to either side of the "culture wars." Just a couple of days ago, for instance, anti-gay radio hosts publicly condoned violence against transgender children. It would be refreshing to see those on "your" side condemn that violent speech. (I, for instance, have condemned Perez Hilton's sexist speech against Carrie Prejean).

Anyway, regarding Obama. I think it's funny that from your perspective Obama has turned out to be more liberal than during his campaign. I only say that because, to some of us in the LGBT community, it's been greatly disappointing that he has yet to follow through on any of his campaign promises to our community.

I'm also curious as to what rights you believe would be "special" for LGBT people. Currently, for instance, federal hate crimes legislation includes religion as a protected category, but not sexual orientation. That sure looks like a special right for religious people to me!

I'm also not sure what to make of this:

"If the LGBT activists get their way, religion will be driven underground, and expressing religious beliefs will become illegal (because it goes against the LGBT agenda). Under King Henry VIII, first Catholics were beheaded, then Protestants (when the king changed his mind). Who will lose their head first? Mormons? There are some who are fighting to see this happen. And that is not American."

You sound very frightened and that is unfortunate. I mostly blame extremist media sources for promoting such demagoguery. If you don't mind, I would be interested in any evidence you have to support this belief. Especially regarding your claim that "there are some who are fighting" to see people lose their heads.

Also, are you aware that many LGBT people are religious? Homosexual and Christian are not mutually exclusive categories.

Anyway, I hope you don't mind that I've been a bit long-winded here. Thanks for letting me take up some of your time.
